Kern County

Nasty County.

It accounts for one-tenth of United States oil production.

I have been to Kernville, the little town that is the center of white water rafting. There was a meanness to the place. It had that bullying feeling.

It is no surprise that the county seat, Bakersfield, will not perform any weddings of any kind at the court house. They will allow marriage papers to be submitted, but they will not officiate.

Ugly place.

How each state and local government handles equality indicates where thinking people need to be or avoid.

I live in Bakersfield, in Kern County, where this is happening.

I have no idea what happened in Kernville to give anyone the impression it's a mean spirited town. All I can say, from my experience, people from small mountain communities are typically welcoming and pleasant unless given a reason. We all know how tourists coming into a community can behave.

As for the gay marriage thing, yes, this county is majority Bush, McCain, Limbaugh and Jesus. Unfortunately, since they are the majority, thier ignorance takes precedence over the more level-headed folks that are sill here, still intelligent, and still very much aware how disgusting prejudice is. No one would have known what was happening in this community unless people upset about it shouted to make others aware.

As most intelligent people are already aware of, being judgemental of an entire community because of the actions of a group is no different than being judgemental over who someone chooses to love.

If one ignores the conservatives, shows some respect for the community that most tourists refuse to do, there's a lot here to enjoy. I hope you come and visit Bakersfield and Kern County; the invitation is open.

--Love your sentiment, zzyzzxzzyx, but ignoring conservatives is impossible.

And, while visiting Kernville, the tourists were behaving very well. It was the local youths, bored and looking for trouble, that created problems. Though, I would visit Kern County in the future when necessary for recreation. No worries there.

Please, get out there and make a fuss.

Heh heh... local youths... another group that can be ignored until thier brains fully mature. (Hm... which may also apply to conservatives, come to think of it.) I could imagine what punk kids trapped on a mountain with nothing to do can be like. The horror... the horror...

I agree conservatives typically shouldn't be ignored. One should pay very close attention to thier spew, dangerous as it is since it mostly centers around religious delusion. Why can't gays have civil rights? Why can't stem cell research be furthered? All because of a deity and rules from a book centuries old. Bleh!

I implied when coming to Kern County and Bakersfield to visit, ignore the imbeciles (there's plenty of them) and enjoy the place for what it is. Kernville is beautiful if you take all the Beavises and Buttheads out of the equation.

*chuckles* I've been making a fuss here since I was old enough to spell.

Keep on doing what you do! A blogger from the local newspaper noticed your post and commented on the newspaper's web site. You've stirred the pot here, and I can always back someone who stirs the pot.
peace

Glad to have stirred the pot. It is tragic that a large group of "religious" people cannot graciously accept positive change.

Glad to know you are doing well in Kern County, keeping the enlightenment alive.
